A NEW eBOOK FROM lOU LEBENTZ

The Regulated Clinician

A trauma-informed journey for the clinicians, coaches, and therapists doing the work.

A book for the wounded healers. For the practitioners who came into this work for reasons that include their own continuing journey. For the people who have been quietly intuiting, for years, that there is more to all of this than the textbooks said. There is. You were right.

A note from the author

This is a book I have wanted to write for a long time, and could not write until now.

I have worked clinically for over twenty-five years. I have trained thousands of practitioners. I have built programmes that sit at the intersection of trauma, the nervous system, and systems change. None of that, on its own, was the qualification I needed to write this particular book.

What I needed was the readiness to write it from where I actually live, rather than from where I have been trained to speak.

I had my own breakdown at twenty-four. I have my own years of addiction in my history. I spent sixteen years looking for help in modalities that were working at the wrong level. I worked as a therapist for six years before anyone in my training ever spoke the word trauma to me as a clinically meaningful concept.

I do not write any of that to be confessional. I write it because, in twenty-five years in clinical and training rooms with practitioners, I have come to believe that a significant proportion of us — perhaps most of us — came into this work from somewhere very close to that.

We came in wounded. We came in seeking. We came in looking, often without knowing it, for the framework that would finally make sense of our own lives.

This book is what I wish someone had written for me at the beginning.

— Lou

Who this book is for

The wounded healers. The early-career and the long walking. The ones who recognise themselves.

If you are early in your career

You are looking for the framework you did not get in your training. You have been intuiting things in the room with your clients that the textbooks did not name. This book is the framework I wish I had been given at the start of my own career.

If you are deep in your career and tired

You have given decades to this work. The question is no longer how to learn more — it is how to keep going. How to do this for another decade, another twenty years, without losing yourself. The Waves in this book are what I rely on, in my own life, to keep doing this.

If you have been wondering whether there is a community somewhere that recognises what you have always recognised

Yes. We are here. We have been waiting for you. The Voyage® is one of the rooms we gather in. This book belongs to that room.

What is inside

The Regulated Clinician walks the full architecture of The Voyage® — twelve Waves across three phases. Land is the foundation. Sea is the depth. Sky is the integration. Each Wave is laid out twice in this book: what it asks of our clients, and what it asks of us. Because the map is not only for the people we work with. It is also for us.

Suggested visual treatment: three horizontal bands stacked vertically, each band a different soft tonal background (sand-cream / sea-light-blue / sky-light-grey). Within each band, four Wave titles listed left-to-right with Roman numerals or Wave numbers in Orange.

Land in the Sand

Wave 1 — Views
Wave 2 — Vehicles
Wave 3 — Vagal
Wave 4 — Virtues

Swim in the Sea

Wave 5 — Vessel Care
Wave 6 — Vows & Verges
Wave 7 — Vice Free
Wave 8 — Voids & Vortexes

Soar in the Sky

Wave 9 — Vision
Wave 10 — Vibe
Wave 11 — Vocation
Wave 12 — Victory

"The map is not only for our clients. It is also for us."

What makes this book different

Most clinical training teaches us to apply techniques to clients. The framework is the thing the client receives. The clinician's job is to deliver it competently and to manage their own response to the work — typically through supervision, sometimes through personal therapy, occasionally through self-care.

But the framework itself is not framed as something the clinician walks. It is framed as something the clinician administers.

That framing has cost us a generation of clinicians.

The Voyage® is built on the opposite assumption.

Every Wave we take a client through, we have walked. We are walking. We will walk again. The map is for us first, in the sense that we cannot take a client somewhere we have not been ourselves. The map is for us continuously, in the sense that the work is not finished.

This is the parallel-journey logic that I have come to believe is the single most important framing for sustainable clinical practice.

"We do not get to skip our own version of any of it because we are professionals."

What practitioners are saying

Early readers from the wider Voyage® community.

"I have been practising for over twenty years and reading clinical books the whole way through. This is the first one that named the engines I have been driving on without knowing it. I closed the book different to how I opened it. I have started keeping the small promises to myself again."

— Senior psychotherapist, NHS, UK

"What Lou does, that nobody else in this field does in quite the same way, is talk to clinicians as kin. As people walking the same Waves the clients are walking. I have read it twice and I will read it again. I am also taking it to supervision."

— Trauma-informed coach, USA
Lorem ipsum

"I trained in a lineage that taught me to administer rather than walk. Reading this book is the first time anyone has given me explicit permission — clinical permission — to do my own work as part of the work. I needed this twenty years ago. I am grateful to have it now."

— Counsellor and clinical supervisor

About Lou Lebentz

Bio (Lou's voice, third person, lightly tightened from the manuscript):

Lou Lebentz is a UKCP-registered psychotherapist, international speaker, and trauma-informed systems designer with over twenty-five years of clinical experience. She is the founder of The Voyage® Academy, a trauma-informed training and systems change organisation operating across the UK and the United States.

Lou's clinical career began in addiction services and intensive therapeutic settings, including a decade at the Priory Hospital working with complex trauma, eating disorders, addictions, and the full spectrum of presentations now recognised as trauma-related. Before her clinical career, Lou worked in fashion and radio — including stints at Capital Radio and Heart 106.2 — a background that informs the warm, direct, peer-to-peer voice she has become known for.

Today, Lou trains clinicians, coaches, leaders, and frontline workers across multiple sectors — healthcare, education, sport, criminal justice, addiction services, leadership development, and the wider community of public-facing professionals she calls The Hidden Listeners. She is the architect of the 4P Protocol™ and Return on Regulation™.

Lou speaks internationally on trauma, the nervous system, and what she calls the trauma reformation — the systemic shift toward institutions, workplaces, and communities that recognise human beings as nervous systems first and behaviours second.

She is currently with her third Deep Dive cohort.

The Regulated Clinician describes the framework. The Deep Dive is the year-long programme where you walk it — alongside others doing the same work, held weekly by Lou personally and the senior faculty.

Twelve Waves. Twelve months. Eighty CPD hours. A small cohort of clinicians, coaches, and therapists committed to walking The Voyage® in their own lives as well as their clients'. The third cohort is currently in flight.

If you walk the book and the pull continues, the Deep Dive will be there.
